OPERATION DISHWATER: Garbage makes floods more hazardous

After posting that "OPERATION BURNOUT" article a few weeks ago, I have realized that there's a big connection between urban areas and these big-time disasters we are having now. Yeah, we can blame carelessness among people, but these disasters have gone overboard to the point it is costing the lives of thousands. From what I can remember, it's worse in the long-run. For example, look at the Chernobyl explosion, and the great oil spill in Canada. These can also happen in our country if our we continue to ignore our terrible actions.

Thinking about it, the most recent man-made issue cause by stressed urbanization is the thick smog enveloping Metro Manila now. Studying in La Salle, I can see the smog all over Makati from Andrew building. And here's is the interesting part: man-made disasters can lead to natural disasters. This is what I'm gonna tackle in this article.

Doesn't surprise me to see the involvement of informal settlers here again. I have nothing against them, but they really need to take responsibility of their environment rather than focusing on their dirt-low salary with which they continue to live in poverty. Sure, city life has been like this for several decades now, and is very different from the province, but really, it is also about living a wealthier and healthier lifestyle. Throwing garbage irresponsibly and abusively destroys that vision.

The article doesn't state a specific location so I consider this as a national issue. Within 5 to 10 years, this will definitely become a crisis if no action is taken. It has been stated that the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's efforts in cleaning the environment will be ineffective if wastes continue to build-up in  urban areas. Just imagine the toxicity level and the mixture of diseases contaminated in people's homes. I really think wealthier homes are unsafe too since the water supply can circulate in several areas.

The image below shows a flooded street in Baguio City. I'm very shocked to see this since 10 years ago Baguio was once a popular vacation spot for nature-lovers. Look at how urban life destroyed it.

In conclusion, I really think we are very close to being too late. That's why we have to end this now by getting people involved.

Mission: SUCCESS!
