Anonymous: The World's Most Powerful Trolling Group- An Introduction

Before I start this topic, I would just like to connect something with my "Taxonomy" post. According to NetLingo, there are 4 general types of trolls based on the types of activity. I was astounded to see "strategic trolls" as having to prepare weeks or even months just to launch an attack... but this is indeed true. http://www.netlingo.com/word/troll.php

"We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us."  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_%28group%29

The quote above is the official Anonymous tagline. Perhaps most of us already know them: a bunch of "hacktivists" wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, in search for absolute intellectual freedom in this world. It is a group, but not an organization, since they label themselves as "disorgnized yet successful". They work together by sharing the same goals basically.

2012 seems likes a big year for the group. They have launched multiple "attacks" all over the world; these attacks are usually a response from current events, but it's all unpredicatable. One notable case is their attack on Stratfor in 2011 where they hacked thousands of credit card numbers and personal information to donate to charity... which backfired in the end. Their latest attack is called "Operation Japan" where they took own the website of the Japanses Business Association.

Not much is known about the group's internal structure: the number of users, their identity, their location and even their main goal. This is because anyone can be a member! People don't need to sign up for something. They can just join in and do whenever they want actually... which is coming off as a revolution.

In my opinion, monitoring them is nearly impossible, given how they have hacked military and industry databases. The best thing I can do is check 4chan or any message boards. Remember that these guys are scattered all over the world, so this would be a great challenge for me.

Anonymous proves that it's more than just trolling; it's a revolution.
